In June of 2013, I left my cozy home in Allentown, PA to the Great Smokey Mountains in Asheville, NC to Nashville, TN to the Muddy Mississippi and Blues in Memphis, TN to Cajun music in New Orleans to where everything is bigger in Houston, TX to the Alamo City of San Antonio to smoldering heat in Tucson, AZ to the red rock country of Sedona, AZ to the magnificent Grand Canyon to smog-covered Los Angeles, to towering mountains dropping off into the Pacific in Big Sur, CA to San Francisco to the peaceful Truckee, CA and Lake Tahoe to sandstone arches in Moab, UT to the Great Salt Lake to the peaks of Denver, CO to the brewing city of Milwaukee, WI to Chesterton, IN and ending with Pittsburgh, PA… and every stretch of dirt and asphalt in between.
Thanks to friends in far places, generous strangers, and a lot of good luck– I covered 8,000 miles of the beautiful and diverse USA. There was no shortage of rich culture, breathtaking landscapes, vast open roads, scorching deserts, busy cities, unforgiving weather, and a lot of time for self-reflection.
I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
