How do you want me to pose?

What makes really good portrait photographers is their ability to see a photo while it’s happening. What makes an even better portrait photograph, in my opinion, is to know how to pose people or organize a group of people in a photo.

Photographers who do it regularly have more experience and probably do it better than I can. This is why I typically turn down wedding photography. While I do have a camera, I don’t specialize in wedding photography. I politely suggest David Naples, who was our wedding photographer, to get the shots you want on your wedding day.

The pressure and expectations involved with wedding photography were never something that appealed to me. I commend those who enter the wedding photography business. They appear fearless and confident. I’m an over-thinker and over-worrier. For the few friends and family that I’ve done weddings for, there’s never been that sense of pressure or fear of failure.

Engagement shoots and graduation photos, however, you can always redo if you have to. So, I dabbled doing a lot of family photos for people close to me. I’d say I definitely have improved over the years and upgraded my gear. I would still refer most people to any number of the great portrait photographers out there. But every now and then, I’ll do a shoot for someone close to me and for one that I will get enjoyment from.

This photo caught a funny moment during Ashley and Dylan’s engagement shoot when I was trying to find the right pose of them sitting on the train tracks at Lock Ridge Park in Alburtis. We were all laughing and I think Dylan was saying “My knees don’t bend that way”.
